As I begin to pack my belongings, it makes me think of all the memories I have gained in my childhood home. From sliding down the muddy hills in my front yard to having mental breakdowns as a teenager, I wouldn’t change a thing. The past twenty years in this house seems like a blur. It went by faster than I ever imagined. I now begin my life as an adult in my own apartment.
I know I will have an amazing time in my new apartment. Being a block from the bay in a small town is what I always wanted. There is still a part of me that is sad. It is bittersweet. I took everything for granted without thanking the most important people in my life. They gave me everything from love to laughter to an education. They gave me a family and a home. I could not be more thankful for my parents and everyone else in my life.
In the next stages, I hope to be more in the moment. I anticipate being in the present, so I don’t take everything for granted.
Being in the present:
- Enjoy the little things.
What is happening today won’t be happening tomorrow. It is important to look up at the sky and enjoy the sunny day.
- Be happy.
Laugh at what goes wrong instead of getting mad. Situations that happen today will get better in the future.
Do one thing at a time. Enjoy every moment from eating to walking.
- Do less.
Enjoy your time off. Make space for time for you and time for family. Instead of rushing through life, just relax. Spend five minutes each day doing nothing.
- Stop worrying about the future.
Recognize what you are thinking about and try to concentrate on the present. Thinking about the future will only stress you out.
- Pay attention.
Pay attention during conversations and pay attention to what you are doing. Just listen and focus.
As my grandma always told me, the most important thing in life is to explore. There are so many wonderful things in this world and we should see it all.
Just live slowly and enjoy your life.
